FIAF- No More Twinkies Edition

Progressives, socialists, unions – they will CRUSH us. Item:

Hostess Brands, baker of iconic Twinkies cakes, said Friday it asked a court’s permission to shut down the entire company after a strike crippled its operations.

The move shuts down one of the nation’s oldest and largest producers of baked goods. Founded in 1930, it produces such well-known brands, aside from Twinkies, as Ding-Dongs, Ho Ho’s, Sno Balls and Donettes, not to mention Wonder bread, which the company says is the best-selling white bread in the United States.

In a statement, Hostess said its bakery operations have been suspended at all plants and that it would lay off most of its 18,500 workers to focus on selling its assets. It said it has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking permission to close its business and sell its assets, including 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers.

Now they’ve killed the Twinkie. Zero Hedge:

The reason: insurmountable (and unfundable) difference in the firm’s collective bargaining agreements and pension obligations, which resulted in a crippling strike that basically shut down the company. In other words, Twinkies may well survive the nuclear apocalypse, but there was one weakest link: the company making them, was unable to survive empowered labor unions who thought they had all the negotiating leverage… until the led their bankrupt employer right off liquidation cliff.

The Teamsters wanted the the employees to suck it up:

“Hostess employees should know this is not an empty threat or a negotiating tactic, but the certain outcome if members of the BCTGM continue to strike. This is based on conversations with our financial experts, who, because the Teamsters were involved in the legal process, had access to financial information about the company.”

Members of the Bakery union should hold a secret ballot vote to decide whether to continue to strike, the Teamsters said:

[The] strike is now on the verge of forcing the company to liquidate – it is difficult for Teamster members to believe that is what the BCTGM Hostess members ultimately wanted to accomplish when they went out on strike. We may never know unless the BCTGM members, based on the facts they know today, get to determine their fate in a secret ballot vote. Teamster members would understand that the will of the BCTGM Hostess membership was truly heard if that was the case.

This is the repeated headline I’ve seen ever since Obama’s been re-elected:

U.S. Stocks Point Lower

Apparently that’s a non-story. Moving on …

The difference between Katrina and Sandy?

After Katrina, President George W. Bush was lambasted for FEMA’s response to the storm. Those aware of the situation in Far Rockaway and other hard-hit areas of New York know that the situation isn’t much different than New Orleans post-Katrina.

George Bush doesn’t care about black people.

With the media’s silence and the public’s amnesia over the impact of the hurricane, President Obama has once again received a free pass on yet another issue of national importance. The media’s outcry over the devastation after Katrina led to a massive influx of aid in the form of governmental agency involvement, subsidies, and private charitable organizations’ assistance. Without that outcry, the victims of Sandy should be wondering what kind of attention they would be receiving if the president’s party began with an R, not a D.

Oh, yes, but that’s the difference. Right?

What is Mr. Magnificent doing today?

10:15 am || Meets with the bipartisan House and Senate leadership at the White House to discuss the Fiscal Cliff; Roosevelt Room
2:00 pm || Meets with leaders of civic organizations and other groups

No daily briefing?

We’re going down like …

Except it’s not going to be awesome.
