And, keep in mind, that Obama has threatened to withhold those checks unless he get that debt limit raise high enough that he doesn’t have to do it again until after the next election. Cynical people would say that smacks of politics, beneath the motivations of our Hope and Change President.
Social Security and Medicare are PONZI schemes.
When Medicare began in 1966, it cost $3 billion; congressional estimates were that, by 1990, it would cost about $12 billion, allowing for inflation. The actual figure turned out to be $107 billion. Today, Medicare’s future unfunded obligations total at least $36 trillion. Other estimates run even higher.
When the program began folks were supposed to mostly die off before they started collecting, and the worker to retiree ratio was a tad healthier. Today, you’ve got three workers supporting one retiree.

So, how high do we need to go go fix thing? Really fricken high. We’d need to confiscate 23.6 of GDP.
And to reach such a stratospheric level of taxation, these groups are calling for unprecedented tax hikes via millionaire surtaxes, higher taxes on alcohol and tobacco, securities transaction taxes, higher taxes on capital gains, higher taxes on corporations, higher death taxes, carbon taxes, and gasoline taxes.
And that’s just to start. Even more would be needed past 2035.
