Obama’s eating his waffle

No beer summit in Baltimore?

Obama has not hesitated to interject himself into a multitude of domestic issues including the Louis Gates arrest (in which he opined, “what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there’s a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately”), the Ground Zero Mosque controversy (in which he discussed “[o]ur capacity to show not merely tolerance, but respect to those who are different from us”), and the Wisconsin budget protests (in which he stated that Governor Walker’s legislation was “an assault on unions”).

In Obama’s world, African-Americans, Muslims, and unions are victims who deserve presidential support. There will be no prosecuting New Black Panthers who terrorize white voters, there will be a worldwide reach out to Islamic terrorists, and union thugs will be given carte blanche to bully members and non-members alike. But white transgender women are on their own.

When two black women beat the crap out of a transgendered white woman, Obama doesn’t follow his own words of wisdom:

[R]ace is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. … And if we walk away now, if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and solve challenges like health care, or education, or the need to find good jobs for every American.

What we have already achieved gives us hope – the audacity to hope – for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

Yea, right. Whatever.

Of course, it’s not just the President who doesn’t want to talk about black women beating up a transgendered white woman. I could find nothing on Pandagon (which is usually ALL OVER gay/lesbian/transgender issues) or Pam Spaulding’s joint.

But, BINGO, I was rewarded for my googling at Feministing.

. But the state attorney is speaking about pursuing hate crime charges in a way that is typical of how these laws are applied: framing it as a race-based attack by people of color against a white person. Hate crime laws are disproportionately used in this way, to target those with less power along a specific identity line. The attack was clearly about gender, but hate crime laws exist in a system that criminalizes people simply for being trans or a person of color – or very often both.

It was “clearly” about gender? The women were initially set off, from accounts, because one of the women’s boyfriends was talking to the victim. But, clearly, this is about gender and had absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that the two assailants were black and the victim was white. Nothing. Nada.

Nothing to see here, move along. There is no other narrative except that people hate transgendered folks.

  1. Only straight white people can commit a hate crime.

Anyone else is getting self-help social justice.

  2. Sean M. Says:

Nobody should ever be charged with a hate crime. It was a brutal assault, who gives a shit what the perps were thinking at the time?

  3. Car in Says:

I agree – hate crime laws are stupid.

I found it funny, thoug – this isn’t about blacks hating whites. It is about straight women hating transgendered. But, they argue, you can’t call it a hate crime, because blacks lack power … bla bla bla. Hate crimes don’t work in this instance because it’s one “hated group” against the other. They null each other out, I think.

    Heads assplode.

  4. Well, I’ve already poked holes in the idea that a crime is somehow more criminal because of the racial/ethnic/sexual identity/gender of the victim, and have been roundly denounced as a hater. But I figure that once intent is inferred from the victim’s status, it is difficult not to see it as further discrimination.

  5. Car in Says:

    All crime is hatey.

What is worthy of a beer summit is that idea that while we need to have national conversations about “racism, straight up” in regards to teh whites discriminating teh blacks (that’s RACCCCIST!), we can totally ignore when blacks are motivated by racism.

And, homophobia in the black community is the gorilla in the room.

  6. And, homophobia in the black community is the gorilla in the room.

You said “Black” and “Gorilla” in the same sentence.

You MUST be a racist. Chrissy Tingles Mathews said so.

  7. Car in Says:

    You got me.

    I’m so ashamed of myself.

  8. *looks around at Curious George books, realizes that there is no comparison, because unlike the Boy King, George never blamed other people for his messes and proved himself capable of learning*
