Killing in the name of

First, a little mood music.

The Quran-burning, held March 20 at the Dove World Outreach Center by church leader Terry Jones in Gainesville, Fla., was “hateful, extremely disrespectful and enormously intolerant,” Gen. Petraeus said.

You know what’s hateful, disrespectful and intolerant? Killing people. Innocent people. Yea, that’s really hateful.

Friday, thousands of people gathered in Mazar-e-Sharif’s revered Blue Mosque. Speaker after speaker denounced the Quran-burning, which for Muslims is abhorrent because Islam teaches that the physical book is holy.

“Stand up against the enemies of the Quran with your pen,” one of the men shouted from the podium, videos show. “Stand up against them with your voices. Stand up against them with weapons. It is everyone’s right to stand up against them and make a jihad.”

Except, don’t use that pen to draw a picture that offends muslims, because that will cause them to rampage as well. And, don’t stand up against muslims with your voice either, because if you’re in an Islamic country that could get you stoned to death.

Why don’t you just shut up and submit?

Max Hastings:

Most Muslim societies are failures, not merely politically, but also economically and industrially. The oppression of women is just one manifestation of a culture that stifles modernity. The only Middle Eastern export the world wants is its oil. Those Muslim countries that lack black gold invent and produce almost nothing else of value, and most are wretchedly poor.

The truth hurts. You know how many books are written in the Middle East? A U.N. survey reports that one book is published per 12,000 people in the Arab world. In Britain, that number is one per 500.

And the Arab world isn’t exactly tearing it up developing useful stuff either. Between 1980 and 199, they had 171 patents. South Korea – alone- had 16,328, and Hewlett-Packard registered 11 a day.

They’ve got oil and Allah.

Indeed, many Arabs exist in a miasma of victimhood. They think themselves exploited by the West, and cherish extraordinary fantasies: that America and its allies are engaged in a struggle to destroy Islam; that the 9/11 attacks on the US were a CIA plot to discredit Muslims.

Perhaps if they read, on average, more than 4 pages of literature PER YEAR* they wouldn’t be so misguided.

*That UN study again.

Steyn ripped into Lindsey Graham today, quoting British General Charles Napier:

You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.

    THAT’S multiculturalism done right.

Yea, that gets right into my thoughts about why I give a shit about offending them. A LOT of things they do over there offend me. Where should I start?

    Where should I start?

    At the practice range…

  4. I think Car in is being much too hard on abrab contributions to the world.

After all, they gave us the zero, which seems to say it all.

  5. MJ Says:

Yes, they’ve done wonders for the world in the past, oh, I don’t know, 5000 years.

And moral equivalence sucks. Killing people and burning a book aren’t really close to the same thing.
