Same as it ever was

I started out at Nice Deb’s joint and followed the links until I got to a question from Susan Estrich; Does Obama get the country’s current situation?

I’m thinking here of the president’s forthcoming vacation to Martha’s Vineyard, one of those terrible decisions that has even his strongest supporters shaking their heads. Why is he going to Martha’s Vineyard?

For vacation. Because he likes it. Because he knows people there, has friends there, enjoys himself there.

I’m from Massachusetts. I was in my 30s the first time I ever set foot in Martha’s Vineyard. Elite. Fancy. Expensive. Hard to get to. The Estrich family from Lynn considered Nantasket Beach exotic. Martha’s Vineyard might as well have been an island off Spain.

I don’t begrudge the president a nice vacation. But having already spent time in Maine this summer, a second vacation to a place other than the hard-hit Gulf is an invitation for people to think what too many of them already think: The president just doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand what’s happening out there, out here. People still don’t have jobs, home values still haven’t recovered, and 401(k)s are still in a slump. The only signs of recovery are a lot of highway projects, which, as we are told every day when the traffic slows, are being paid for by us.

Right Pundits has the greatest title.

The First Lady’s excessive trip to Spain on the President’s birthday has garnered much attention in the press. The left fawns over her as some sort of modern day American queen who has somehow earned the right to partake in luxuries that most of us will never know, simply by virtue of the fact that she is Michelle Obama. Never taking into account the economic struggles of everyday Americans on a daily basis, all the while asking, no, telling us we must sacrifice for the greater good.

How many vacations have YOU taken this year? No Obama doesn’t “get it.” He’s golfing and flying about the country. And Michelle will have taken eight vacations by the end of this month.

New York in March; Chicago, over Memorial Day; Los Angeles in June; Camp David — sort of an extension of the White House — in July; Maine in July, to highlight Acadia National Park, and now Spain. Mrs. Obama is glamorizing Spain’s coastal resorts before her Aug. 14 first family weekend visit to Florida’s Gulf Coast, to encourage tourists scared away by the oil spill. Starting Aug. 19, the Obamas will spend 10 days in Martha’s Vineyard.

That “shared sacrifice” stuff Obama spoke about 17 months ago? That’s gonna be just us sharing that.

I don’t begrudge anyone rest and relaxation when they work hard. We all need downtime – the First Family included. It’s the extravagance of Michelle Obama’s trip and glitzy destination contrasted with President Obama’s demonization of the rich that smacks of hypocrisy and perpetuates a disconnect between the country and its leaders. Toning down the flash would humanize the Obamas and signify that they sympathize with the setbacks of the people they were elected to serve.

In January, President Obama insisted that “everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good. Everybody is going to have to give. Everybody is going to have to have some skin in the game.”

This is the way it works with all socialists. They hype an anti-fat-cats mentality, all the while they live a life of black tie functions and jet-set vacations. The rest of us? Well, the goal is an equality of income that rests somewhere around the lower middle class level. That’s what these progressives have in mind for us.

It amazes me that clueless Ogabe doesn’t have someone on his staff to advise him of how inappropriate and offensive his and the First Wookie’s behavior is.

Maybe his people are too busy blowing him.
