Us and Them

Remember when Jimmy Carter wore sweaters and turned down the thermostat in the White House during the gasoline shortage? And, remember how Bush gave up golf because he didn’t want a military mom to see images of him on the fairway on the day they received unfortunate news.

Well, the Obamas don’t see a reason to let a recession, massive unemployment, or a crises in the gulf interrupt their good times.

With George and Martha looking down from their framed perches on the walls of the stately East Room, you’ve turned the White House into “a showcase of glitzy extravagance.” Welcome to Barack Obama’s Animal House…er, National Lampoon’s White House…no, let’s get this straight, Barack Obama’s White House.

You have created a world of lavish galas, of black ties and celebrity chefs, of “star-studded” guest lists, celebrated by the admiring Washington Post as a return to “Camelot, the Big Myth, the story of American royalty[.]” You are for the media elites “Camelot’s new knight” in “shining armor,” and, together with Michelle, you are royalty bringing this dreary republic “a palace of sunshine.”

Awesome, beamed The Washington Post in print last week about your celebration of the music of Paul McCartney. “It was all love” for both you and Sir Paul, for your friends on “the A-List.” Michelle cried, you had tears in your eyes, and even Jerry Seinfeld offered a sniff or two.

How much partying are they doing?

Klayman said the reports of the partying at the White House, “with the likes of Steve Wonder and other high priced entertainment stars,” will be the focus of document requests being submitted to the General Services Administration. The requests will seek to determine how much taxpayer money is being used.

“Barack and Michelle Obama have been throwing taxpayer funded parties nearly every night with their ‘friends’ and supporters, with Michelle Obama even exhorting them not to ‘break’ White House property,” Klayman’s announcement said.

“This party atmosphere sends the wrong message to the American people. As the Obama-Clinton crowd party on, the American people are suffering greatly,” Klayman said.

And, as the article mentions many of the parties are just that – parties. Not political events.

“You would have felt like a fool talking about politics at this party,” said Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., said after one major event. “I was surprised how much of a social event it was and how little of a political occasion it was.”

Remember a simpler time? Back when Hope and Change was all the rage?

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times […] That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

Yea … that “leadership” word. How is Obama leading by example?

Oh, look! The Obamas went to another party last night. Meeting with important heads of state? Well … no.

Ford’s Theatre Society will host its annual gala on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Ford’s Theatre (511 10th Street NW). The evening’s performance, titled “America Celebrates July 4th at Ford’s Theatre,” will be taped for broadcast on the ABC Television Network to air July 2, 2010 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET). Modern Family cast member Ty Burrell hosts a star-studded program with appearances by Kelly Clarkson, Renee Fleming, George Lopez, Lionel Richie, Robin Roberts, Dick Van Dyke, Laura Michelle Kelly and Gavin Lee from the Broadway Company of “Mary Poppins,” the Soldiers’ Chorus of the United States Army Field Band, and cast members from the Ford’s Theatre production of “Little Shop of Horrors.”

But, you see, Obama’s doing this for us.

Lyrics on a page and voices on a stage have helped make us across generations and across cultures, backgrounds, and faiths. Great leaders including Lincoln himself have drawn inspiration and courage from the arts. “And on a personal note, they helped each of us express the joys and hardships of life while bringing us closer to each other.”

This is especially true during moments of trial. The president said there have been a lot of trials over the past year and a half. Now, there are brothers and sisters in the Gulf Coast who are going through an incredibly difficult time in the face of a disaster unlike any we’ve seen of late. “I want to emphasize again that we’re going to do everything we can in the weeks and months and years ahead to make this right,” and everyone here feels the same way.

Of course, “we” can’t go and party like the Obamas; being surrounded by musicians and courted by Hollywood’s richest. He’s doing that for us while we all struggle with homes worth a quarter of what we owe on ’em, friends and family members unemployed, financial uncertainty, a catastrophe in the gulf …

Brave on soldier.

The president and first lady were announced and walked to their seats at front row center. FLOTUS is wearing a stunning silver strapless dress with a large crystal necklace with what looks like two small fabric bows on either side. Designer unknown to pooler.

Bless her!

For someone who fancies himself a modern Abraham Lincoln, you’d think he would have avoided Ford’s Theater.

C’mon, Carin. He’s OWED all that stuff, for you know, all those years of slavery and oppression. Or something.

Doesn’t he seem like a teenager who’s gotten a hold of his parent’s credit cards, and he’s going to have as much fun as he can before they find out and cut him off?

He’s paying for all this out of the OPM budget.

    Other People’s Money.
