March Employment Situation

Numbers came out today, and Geoff, our normal moron distributer of such info is busy.

Unemployment remains at 9.7, despite all the hiring for the census.

Some tidbits:

– Long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) increased by 414,000 over the month to 6.5 million.

-44.1 percent of unemployed persons were jobless for 27 weeks or more.

– 1.0 million discouraged workers in March, up by 309,000 from a year earlier.

– Financial activities shed 21,000 jobs, with the largest losses occur-
ring in insurance carriers and related activities (-9,000). Employment in the
information industry decreased by 12,000.

    (Seriously, am debating this with a friend, and he’s all, “It’s just sad that Fox News has to politicize this good news”. um, yeah guy. pointed him to Robert Reich’s column that runs along the same lines. heh)
